Homesteading in Zone 5 — the honest math behind frugal living

Heating with wood is romantic until you do the cost-per-BTU math. Here is how the firewood ledger actually pencils out in Zone 5.

Cord math

Price a cord delivered, or price your chainsaw, gas, bar oil, and the weekends it takes to cut and split your own. Both are real costs; only one shows up on a receipt.

Compare on heat, not price

Convert everything to dollars per million BTU and compare wood against propane and electric. Seasoned hardwood usually wins — if you have a source and the time.
